A recent study indicates that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
